Questions and answers

Moving to Denmark: what people ask us most

Short answers checked against the Danish authorities' own websites, each with a link to the full guide and to the right place in the client portal.

It depends on your citizenship. Nordic citizens can live, work and study in Denmark without a permit. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens do not need a work permit, but apply to SIRI for an EU residence document if they stay longer than 3 months. Everyone else needs a Danish residence and work permit before starting work, usually under the Pay Limit Scheme, the Positive Lists or Fast-track.

At least DKK 552,000 a year in 2026. The Supplementary Pay Limit Scheme has a lower threshold of DKK 446,000 a year, with extra conditions. Only guaranteed pay, labour market pension and holiday allowance count, and the salary must be paid into a Danish bank account.

SIRI's normal processing times are about 10 days to 1 month under Fast-track, 1 month under the Pay Limit Scheme and the Positive List for people with a higher education, 2 months under the Supplementary Pay Limit Scheme and 3 months under the Positive List for skilled work. Cases where SIRI needs more information take longer.

No later than 5 days after you move in to your Danish address, once you have your residence permit or EU residence document. Your health insurance card is sent to your Danish address about 2 to 3 weeks after you register.

Both spouses must normally be at least 24, the spouse in Denmark must not have received certain public benefits in the past 3 years, and you need a financial guarantee of DKK 61,709.34 (2026) and a home of sufficient size. Integration requirements also apply. The Danish Immigration Service expects to decide within up to 10 months.

Most applicants need 8 years of uninterrupted legal residence, or 4 years if they meet all four supplementary requirements. You must also meet the requirements on full-time work, self-support and Danish language that apply to your case.

Normally after 9 years of continuous legal residence, once you have held permanent residence for at least 2 years. You must also pass a Danish language test and the citizenship test, meet the self-support requirements and sign a declaration of loyalty to Denmark.

You create an account in our client portal, book a consultation, receive a personal roadmap and sign the service agreement and power of attorney. Every document, deadline and message then stays in one case in the portal, for individuals and families as well as for companies relocating employees.
