How schooling works in Denmark

  • Public school (folkeskole) is free of charge. At private schools the parents pay, and the fees vary greatly from school to school.
  • Private schools in Denmark receive a substantial government subsidy, whatever their ideological, religious, political or ethnic basis.
  • International basic schools are private schools approved by the Ministry of Children and Education to teach in a language other than Danish, mostly English, either the whole school or a department of it.
  • The European School Copenhagen is public and free of charge, but places are limited and the school manages its own admissions.
  • The City of Copenhagen does not give financial support for pupils at private schools.

Upper secondary: IB and European Baccalaureate

Denmark has both private and public international upper secondary schools. An international programme such as the IB Diploma must give access to higher education in Denmark. Public schools with the IB Diploma include AARHUS GYMNASIUM (Aarhus), Hasseris Gymnasium (Aalborg) and Kolding Gymnasium (Kolding).

Before you apply

  • Apply directly to each school, ideally well in advance: each school sets its own registration and admission rules.
  • Ask about waiting lists, the one-time fees (application, registration, deposit) and how many months a year the fee is paid.
  • Many fees are charged for 11 months a year (July free); some are charged for all 12 months.
  • Children who live in Denmark can also attend the local public school (folkeskole), which is free of charge; your municipality tells you which school.
Fees as published by each school for the 2026/27 school year. Check the current amounts with the school before you apply.
